CARICOM Chairman opened 50th CARICOM Heads Meeting with strong call for togetherness

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) – Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) The Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis opened the 50th Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government late Tuesday 24 February, urging CARICOM to embrace unity and deepen cooperation.

Highlighting the historic full gathering of CARICOM leaders, he said it was a sign of the Community’s resolve at a critical time, noting “Even in adversity, there is opportunity.”

This decisive hour at which CARICOM stands with the global order shifting, supply chains remaining uncertain, energy markets fluctuating, and climate shocks intensifying, requires decisive action, the CARICOM Chairman said adding that in such a world, “fragmentation breeds vulnerability, but togetherness generates resilience.”

Reflecting on his recent tour of CARICOM capitals, he said,

“It stirred a sense of pride, a sense of dignity,” he said, adding that despite different political and geopolitical views, “these leaders in the Caribbean who are reflection of our people are surely people to be proud of.”

The CARICOM Chairman reaffirmed that the Community’s founding principles remain critical, noting, “Our integration was neither accidental nor causal… It was a declaration of Caribbean confidence.”
