Hurricane preparedness webinars emphasise anticipatory action to protect agriculture sector

5 Jun 2026

Emphasis on anticipatory action to minimise the impact of hurricanes on agriculture, disaster recovery experiences of CARICOM Member States, and best practices, were some of the high points of the CARICOM Secretariat webinar series that focused on hurricane preparedness.

The Secretariat partnered with international and regional organisations, agencies and individuals to host four (4) hour-long webinars in May as part of the Food for Lunch series. The webinars were aimed at preparing the sector for the 2026 hurricane season which began on 1 June. The sessions focused on protecting crops, livestock and fisheries, and disaster response and recovery.

Dr. Wendell Samuel, CARICOM Assistant Secretary-General (ag), Economic Integration, Innovation and Development, and Dr. Renata Clarke, Sub-Regional Coordinator for the Caribbean, Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations set the stage for the series at the launch on 8 May, highlighting the devastating impact of disasters on the Region and how the webinars could shine a light on preparedness, partnerships, and collaboration.
