About the SDGs and the Unit
Sustainable development has been defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable development calls for concerted efforts towards building an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future for people and planet. For sustainable development to be achieved, it is crucial to harmonize three core elements: economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection. These elements are interconnected and all are vital for the well–being of individuals and societies.
Eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions is an indispensable requirement for sustainable development. To this end, there must be promotion of sustainable, inclusive and equitable economic growth, creating greater opportunities for all, reducing inequalities, raising basic standards of living, fostering equitable social development and inclusion, and promoting integrated and sustainable management of natural resources and ecosystems.
The 193 Member States of the United Nations reached consensus on the outcome document of a new sustainable development agenda entitled, “Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. The new Goals and targets came into effect on 1 January 2016 and will guide the decisions we take to meet the objectives of the 2030 agenda.

Conference
The conference is designed to bring together the various partners who operate across the goals associated with Sustainable Development. This conference is intended to discuss how the activities, behaviors and transactions that occur in our economic and social environments that move us towards achieving the 2030 SDG agenda.
The panelists will discuss how progress and ultimate advancement of the 2030 Agenda can be achieved through partnerships in the economic and social spheres. Our panelists will give perspectives from their various fields/sectors on Sustainable Development and the goals, and give insight as to what their sectors can do to propel this agenda forward for The Bahamas.
From their vantage point, they can give insight on what we are doing well and what we can improve upon. Additionally, from the information provided during this conference, we can identify where the real gaps are. Lastly, based on the engagement with the participants and the panel discussions, recommendations can be made through our committees on what the country’s next step can be in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
