Enhanced regional cooperation was the basis of the discussions

Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers Confederation (BCCEC) CEO Jeffrey N. Beckles and BCCEC Trade Services Manager met with new Cuban Ambassador Alejandro Garcia del Toro in a courtesy call, on July 14th, 2020 to discuss potential business and trade opportunities between The Bahamas and Cuba.

Enhanced regional cooperation was the basis of the discussions. “The Caribbean region has to take a collective focus on how to sustain itself in the midst of the current economic environment especially as it pertains to agriculture, marine resources, and technology,” stated Beckles.

Ambassador Garcia del Toro agreed with these sentiments and offered technical assistance to the Government of The Bahamas in the areas of fishing and agriculture and added that Cuba had recently taken great steps to lessen its import of food.

Expanding the role of SMSE’s in the economy was also discussed

Beckles also expressed a desire for greater business exchange between both countries. Ambassador del Toro, therefore, extended an invitation to the Bahamian business community to attend the Havana International Fair (FIHAV) in 2021. He also committed to fostering exchange between the Cuban Chamber of Commerce and BCCEC.

Expanding the role of SMSE’s in the economy, especially around small manufacturing and the creative sector, was also discussed.
