BMA Advances Compliance, Climate and Security Priorities<\/h3>\n

The Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) participated in the Bahamas Shipowners Association (BSA) Annual General Meeting on 29 January 2026 at Trinity House, London. Held in a hybrid format under the theme \u201cThreats to Shipping,\u201d the AGM brought together shipowners, industry stakeholders and invited guests to examine the geopolitical, security, cyber and regulatory challenges facing the global maritime sector.<\/p>\n

Opening the meeting, Capt. Domenico Rognoni, Chair of the BSA, highlighted the evolving risk landscape and the importance of close engagement between shipowners, flag States and international bodies.<\/p>\n

Addressing the meeting on behalf of the BMA, Jacqueline M. Simmons, Chairman of the Board, reaffirmed the BMA\u2019s focus on quality, responsiveness and practical service delivery in an increasingly complex operating environment. She referenced route disruptions, sanctions, cyber and security threats, and stressed that the safety and welfare of seafarers and the right of safe passage remain fundamental priorities. Ms. Simmons also underscored The Bahamas\u2019 commitment to multilateral cooperation through the International Maritime Organization (IMO), including support for the IMO\u2019s goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, while advocating for measures that are ambitious, equitable and workable in practice.<\/p>\n

Global Risks, Local Resolve: Bahamas Maritime Charts the Course<\/h3>\n

Further insight was provided by Captain Dwain Hutchinson, Managing Director and CEO of the BMA, who outlined the scale, diversity and global footprint of the Bahamas fleet. He emphasized that the strength of the Bahamas flag lies in its diversified ship types, strong Port State Control performance and close engagement with shipowners and international bodies. Capt. Hutchinson also noted that 2025 marked 30 years since the establishment of the BMA, reflecting on the Authority\u2019s evolution while maintaining a strong focus on regulatory credibility, service delivery and long-term leadership.<\/p>\n

The AGM featured a keynote address by Thomas A. Kazakos, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), alongside expert presentations on cyber security and maritime security. A panel discussion and Q&A session reinforced the importance of collaboration between industry and regulators in supporting safe, secure and efficient global shipping.<\/p>\n

The meeting concluded with closing remarks from Peter John Goulandris, Deputy Chairman of the BMA board, and Capt. Rognoni.<\/p>\n
