STEM for Oceans students with Royal Caribbean execs and govt officials<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Royal Caribbean International hosted<\/span>\u00a0students from three New Providence\u00a0Island\u00a0schools\u00a0in The Bahamas\u00a0as they\u00a0explored the world\u2019s newest wonder,\u00a0<\/span>Wonder of the Seas<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/a>,\u00a0as a part of the cruise line\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>STEM for Oceans<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0initiative.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The students, who ranged from\u00a08\u00a0to\u00a019\u00a0years old,\u00a0were\u00a0split\u00a0into\u00a0different age groups\u00a0to\u00a0participate in a variety of\u00a0immersive\u00a0<\/span>Science,\u00a0Technology,\u00a0Engineering and\u00a0Math (STEM)\u00a0<\/span><\/b>activities<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>on\u00a0board\u00a0the cruise line\u2019s new ship. The\u00a0experience included\u00a0a\u00a0guided\u00a0tour of\u00a0the firsts and favorites across\u00a0<\/span>Wonder\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/i>eight neighborhoods,\u00a0lunch in\u00a0Solarium Bistro\u00a0\u2013 one of the ship\u2019s 40-plus restaurants,\u00a0bars\u00a0and lounges \u2013\u00a0and an original\u00a0production\u00a0put on by\u00a0the\u00a0cast\u00a0on board.\u00a0The student\u00a0received a\u00a0behind-the-scenes look at\u00a0the engine control room\u00a0and\u00a0met with the Environmental Officer on board to\u00a0understand how\u00a0the advanced\u00a0wastewater\u00a0purification system treats water on board.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bradrico Smith, 16, a student at C.V. Bethel Senior High who was in one of the tour groups, said he hopes to one day have a career in STEM and maybe work on a cruise ship. He said that since joining the STEM program, his specific interests have shifted slightly.\u00a0\u201cI want to do either aeronautics or engineering.\u00a0I always liked engineering beforehand. But I like marine engineering more since starting STEM for\u00a0Oceans,\u201d\u00a0said Smith.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The STEM for Oceans program, which was established in partnership with the\u00a0<\/span>Pan American Development Foundation (PADF)<\/span><\/b>, is part of Royal Caribbean\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Blue Green Promise<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>to protect, inspire and empower sustainable ocean communities. The program aims to enhance local curriculums with regional ocean conservation topics during camps held after school or during the weekends. Attending students between the ages of\u00a05\u00a0and 18 participate in\u00a0hands-on\u00a0STEM\u00a0activities,\u00a0like building robotic\u00a0rovers and\u00a0identifying ocean fauna. STEM for Oceans caters to vulnerable populations, including youth\u00a0living with disabilities, youth from The Bahamas AIDS Foundation and teen student mothers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u00a0are\u00a0thrilled\u00a0to host the STEM for\u00a0Oceans\u00a0camp\u00a0on\u00a0board\u00a0one of\u00a0our ships\u00a0for the first time\u00a0as part of our Blue Green Promise efforts,\u201d said Helen O\u2019Connell, associate vice\u00a0president, Community\u00a0and Destination\u00a0Engagement,\u00a0Royal Caribbean\u00a0Group.\u00a0\u201cIt has been wonderful to see the students\u00a0grow and learn during the camp,\u00a0and\u00a0we hope today\u2019s visit inspires\u00a0a continued passion for science, technology and,\u00a0most importantly,\u00a0protecting our oceans.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Royal Caribbean sees STEM as a key driver for development<\/span><\/h3>\n

The cruise line\u2019s STEM for Oceans program was first offered in 2019 with the goal of providing public school students in The Bahamas with STEM-related learning opportunities in connection with the ocean.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cRoyal Caribbean International and PADF both believe in the power of STEM as a key driver for development. We offer STEM education to enhance community engagement, foster innovative ideas, and identify concrete local solutions to reduce poverty and environmental impact,\u201d said Sowmya Krishnamoorthy,\u00a0Director of Partnerships and Sustainable Finance, PADF. \u201cThe STEM for Oceans initiative gives Bahamian students the opportunity to collaborate in groups and sharpen their communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving\u00a0skills. We are proud of our partnership with Royal Caribbean and hope to continue to serve youth in the Bahamas and Caribbean region through this initiative.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The experience\u00a0the students\u00a0had\u00a0on board\u00a0allowed them to explore\u00a0ocean\u00a0STEM skills\u00a0and build upon\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>intrinsic connection to oceans that many Bahamians have. It also<\/span>\u00a0provided\u00a0a high-level overview\u00a0of\u00a0Royal Caribbean\u2019s pledge to\u00a0the\u00a0environment. The cruise\u00a0line\u00a0is not only seeking to develop a net-zero carbon emissions cruise ship,\u00a0but\u00a0it is\u00a0also committed to a path to net-zero emissions by 2050.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Vaughn\u00a0Miller,\u00a0Minister of the Environment\u00a0said there is an inextricable connection between environmental protection and the tourism industry in The Bahamas.\u00a0\u201cThat is why cruise ships come to The Bahamas, because of our water [and] because our environment is very attractive.\u00a0If we lose that edge, we lose the industry. We lose the business. And so,\u00a0we’re\u00a0very excited about this [STEM program] and very hopeful that they continue this for a long time.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Royal Caribbean has maintained its commitment to The Bahamas, bringing\u00a0several\u00a0of the world\u2019s largest\u00a0ships\u00a0to its shores\u00a0for years\u00a0and\u00a0supporting numerous initiatives ranging from educational to cultural to philanthropic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the STEM for Oceans program, Royal Caribbean is also a major sponsor of the Bahamas Feeding Network\u00a0and the Music Makers Junkanoo group.\u00a0Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Michael Bayley also sits on the steering committee of the Agricultural Development Organization.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
