{"id":81501,"date":"2020-12-15T15:18:52","date_gmt":"2020-12-15T15:18:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bahamastradeinfo.gov.bs\/buy\/?p=81501"},"modified":"2020-12-15T15:18:52","modified_gmt":"2020-12-15T15:18:52","slug":"wto-members-endorse-package-to-support-micro-small-and-medium-sized-enterprises","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamastradeinfo.gov.bs\/buy\/2020\/12\/15\/wto-members-endorse-package-to-support-micro-small-and-medium-sized-enterprises\/","title":{"rendered":"WTO Members Endorse Package to Support Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Strong message of commitment for a more inclusive trading system<\/h3>\n<p>Members of the World Trade Organization\u2019s Informal Working Group on micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (WTO IWG on MSMEs) have released\u00a0<a title=\"a package of Recommendations and Declarations to support MSMEs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wto.org\/english\/news_e\/news20_e\/msmes_11dec20_e.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a package of Recommendations and Declarations to support MSMEs<\/a>\u00a0to strengthen their engagement in international trade.<\/p>\n<p>The WTO held a\u00a0<a title=\"dedicated event\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wto.org\/english\/forums_e\/business_e\/msme_dec20_e.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dedicated event<\/a>\u00a0on 15 December 2020 to present the package to the private sector and prompt discussion on implementing the policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new package sends a strong and concrete message of support and commitment from governments and the WTO to continue working towards a more inclusive trading system which places MSME resilience at the centre of the recovery,\u201d Pamela Coke-Hamilton, Executive Director of the International Trade Centre (ITC) said.<\/p>\n<p>The package, endorsed by the 91 member economies of the WTO IWG on MSMEs, consists of six recommendations and declarations on crucial issues for MSMEs. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Collecting and maintaining information related to MSMEs<\/li>\n<li>Access to information<\/li>\n<li>Trade facilitation<\/li>\n<li>Promoting MSME inclusion in regulatory development<\/li>\n<li>MSMEs and the WTO Integrated Database<\/li>\n<li>Addressing trade-related aspects of MSMEs and access to finance and cross-border payments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By making progress in these areas, governments will ensure that MSMEs are at the heart of their policymaking efforts and economic recovery strategies.<\/p>\n<h3>MSMEs have been hit hard by the pandemic<\/h3>\n<p>The focus on smaller firms is particularly timely because the economic disruption caused by the COVID19 pandemic has significantly impacted MSMEs worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor MSMEs, as they often struggle to participate in international trade and have been hit hard by the pandemic, by endorsing this package, we show them that we care and stand ready to help them,\u201d said Ambassador Jos\u00e9 Luis Cancela of Uruguay, who is also the coordinator of the WTO IWG on MSMEs.<\/p>\n<p>As firms continue to face uncertainty resulting from rapidly shifting global market conditions, access to information is vital for making the most of emerging opportunities in the global marketplace.<\/p>\n<p>The Declaration on Access to information recognizes the importance of the\u00a0<a title=\"Global Trade Helpdesk\" href=\"https:\/\/globaltradehelpdesk.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global Trade Helpdesk<\/a>\u00a0as an integrated source of trade information from across 11 partner agencies designed to meet the needs of smaller firms.<\/p>\n<p>The platform simplifies market research by providing access to information about demand, market access conditions such as tariffs and regulations, export and import procedures, and more in one accessible platform.
